Important Information:
*What to expect during the donation process*
- The Red Cross staff and Phi Gamma Nu volunteers will sign you in and go over basic eligibility and donation information. You will read information about donating blood, and will be asked to show a driver's license, or other form(s) of ID.
- You will answer some questions during a private and confidential interview with a Red Cross staff member about your health history and places you have traveled. The actual donation takes ONLY about 8-10 minutes, during which you will be seated comfortably. The process is safe and sterile. Red Cross staff and Phi Gamma Nu volunteers will be available if you have any questions.
- After donating, you can have a snack and something to drink. You can leave the site after 10-15 minutes and continue with your normal daily activities. Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment knowing that you have helped save lives.
*What to bring to the donation and how to prepare*
- Bring your driver's license or two other forms of identification with you to your donation.
- Have a healthy meal before your donation – avoid foods high in fat just prior to donation.
- Hydrate – drink extra liquid before and after your donation.

CONSIDER BEING A DOUBLE RED CELL DONOR
- Double red cell donation is done with the help of an apheresis machine which collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets to the donor.
- Red cells are the most transfused blood component, and certain blood types are often in short supply.
- Double red cell donations from Type O donors and donors with Rh-negative blood types play a very important role in maintaining blood supply levels.
- Double red cell donations take approximately 1 hour and allows you to give two pints of red cells.
- Donors are eligible to give double red cells every 112 days.
Double Red Cell Donor Eligibility
If you are male, you must:
• Be healthy
• Be at least 17 years old in most states
• Be at least 5'1"
• Weigh at least 130 lbs.
If you are female, you must:
• Be healthy
• Be at least 17 years old in most states
• Be at least 5'5"
• Weigh at least 150 lbs.

- Type O and type B negative blood supplies have dropped to emergency levels.
- Type O negative blood can be used for any patient when there is not time to determine the patient's blood type, it is crucial that there is a sufficient supply.
